Exercise and Afterburn

Of course you knew that exercise burns calories. You may also have known that it boosts metabolism for 20-30 minutes afterwards. But did you know that the calorie burn can last much longer. One study found that 45 minutes of hard exercise led to metabolism staying elevated for 14 hours! They had a group of men cycle hard for 45 minutes and burn about 500 calories. Then in the next 14 hours, they burned 190 more calories and did nothing. That is a nice bonus. The problem is that it requires HARD exercise which they defined as 70% of maximal oxygen uptake. So it is not walking but pushing yourself. If you can do it, the calorie burn lasts. This is good news.
