Mindful Eating

What a wonderful concept! Please check out Jan Chozen Bays book MIndful Eating: A Guide to Rediscovering a Healthy and Joyful Relationship with Food. It also comes with a CD to practice the exercises. I love her concept of the 7 Hungers. These hungers are eye, nose, mouth, stomach, cellular, mind, and heart hunger. Sitting with a food and checking in with yourself about each hunger to see why are you wanting to eat this food is a great practice. You begin to be more aware of why you are eating what you are eating. There is nothing wrong with any of the hungers. They just are. And the awareness can lead you to healthier eating. There are times we want the comfort foods like apple pie and ice cream. It serves a need of the heart. And we can be aware and ask what else serves the need of the heart. Cellular hunger is the essence for a healthy body and most of us are way out of touch with this. It requires an increased sensitivity to what the body needs on the cellular level. As you clear out the junk foods and are more mindful of what you are eating and how your body feels before and after you eat this, you can begin the journey to exploring cellular hunger. I highly recommend this book and approach. Thich Nhat Hanh has also just published a book on minful eating and I will let you know about this one in the near future. Happy eating!
